Huawei announced the Mate 50 series, which includes satellite communication technology.

Huawei debuted its highly-anticipated Mate 50 series smartphone that allows satellite connection, becoming the first smartphone manufacturer to offer this technology to consumer markets.

According to Richard Yu Chengdong, CEO of Huawei’s consumer business group, during the product presentation via the South China Morning Post, the Mate 50 series is the first smartphone to employ technology that is supported by China’s Beidou Satellite Navigation System, which offers an emergency mode that operates independently using battery power, allowing users to send a message in a signal-free environment and in emergency situations such as earthquake rescue.

The new Mate 50 series has four models, consisting of the Mate 50, the Mate 50 Pro, the Mate 50 RS Porsche design, and the Mate 50E.

Beginning with the Mate 50, it features a 6.8-inch OLED display with a resolution of 2700 x 1224. There is also a refresh rate of 90Hz and a touch sampling rate of 300Hz. Additionally, it offers 1440Hz PWM dimming and a 1.07 billion-color primary display. This smartphone is equipped with a 4,460mAh battery, 66W wired charging, and 50W wireless charging.

Three primary camera sensors are included on the base model. There is a 50MP ultra-optical variable camera (RYYB, f/1.4-f/4.0, laser focus sensor, 10-channel multispectral sensor), a 12MP periscope telephoto camera (RYYB, 5x optical zoom, f/3.4, OIS optical image stabilization, 100x Zoom range: 13mm – 1350mm), and a 13MP ultra-wide-angle camera (f/2.2, super macro shooting).

Moving forward, the Mate 50 Pro sports a 6.74-inch screen with a higher 120Hz refresh rate. Other display technologies are the same, however it receives an additional 3D face payment in addition to an under-screen fingerprint sensor. The battery is larger at 4,700mAh and comes with the same 66W wired charging.

A triple camera configuration is also included on the Mate 50 Pro. It features a 64MP periscope telephoto camera (RYYB, 3.5x optical zoom, f/3.5, OIS optical image stabilization, 200 Double zoom range: 13mm-2700mm), a 50MP super-optical variable camera (RYYB, f/1.4-f/4.0, OIS optical image stabilization, proximity light sensor, laser focus sensor, 10-channel multispectral sensor), and a 13MP ultra-wide-angle camera (f/2.2, super macro shooting).

Aside from these two smartphones, there is also the HUAWEI Mate50 RS Porsche design, which has a supercar-inspired appearance. It is the first in the industry to include a super macro telephoto camera as well as dual-lens group long-stroke sliding axis technology. HUAWEI has also released a more affordable model, the Mate 50E, which features a Snapdragon 778G 4G processor. 

The Mate 50E is the only flagship that does not employ the 4G Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC while the other three flagships do. Their outstanding camera systems also share the XMAGE image technology, which was created in-house. With the release of these devices, HUAWEI is the first company to put Beidou satellite messages on smartphones. This makes it possible for people to text even when there is no network. As promised, they also added the emergency mode to HarmonyOS 3.0. It turns on automatically when the battery is at 1% and lets the device stand by for 3 hours and talk for 12 hours.

When it comes to pricing, the Mate 50 Pro starts at CNY6,799 (~RM4,414) for the 256GB version, while the Mate 50 will start at CNY4,999 (~RM3,243) for the 128GB version. Lastly, the price for the Mate RS Porsche design is listed at CNY12,999 (~RM8,422). At the moment, this new flagship smartphone is scheduled to begin selling in China, and it is currently unknown whether or not Huawei will bring the Mate 50 series to Malaysia.
