Instagram will roll out the Nudity Protection feature to cover repulsive images in Direct Messages.

When a user receives an unsolicited nude in a direct message, Instagram is working on a new feature called Nudity Protection that will automatically conceal it. Alessandro Paluzzi, an app and reverse engineer, was the first person to discover this nudity protection feature, and it has been reported that this feature will use the technology available on the device itself to cover up “photos that may contain nudity in chats.”

Meanwhile, a screenshot of the upcoming feature has revealed that Instagram won’t be able to access the despicable image and it will remain hidden unless the user chooses to view it. Additionally, this feature is anticipated to launch in the upcoming weeks. As reported in The Verge, the parent company of Instagram, Meta has confirmed the existence of the feature and revealed that it is currently in the preliminary stages of the development process.

On top of that, Instagram has added that this will be a feature which users need to enable in their account, rather than having it enabled by default when it comes out. Liz Fernandez, a spokesperson for Meta stated, “We’re working closely with experts to ensure these new features preserve people’s privacy while giving them control over the messages they receive.” This statement was made in response to privacy concerns that arose as a result of Instagram’s ability to analyse photos that are sent to direct messages. The company reaffirmed that Instagram and Meta would not be able to view the contents of the messages or share them with any outside parties if the feature was implemented.

At this moment, we do not have any further information regarding the nudity protection feature that Instagram offers. However, Meta has plans to share more information about the feature as it is tested over the next few weeks.
